The Modern Learner has changed the face of corporate training

What is the Modern Learner? Or more specifically – who is the Modern Learner? As explained by Armelle Jaclot (Marketing Manager at Learnlight) at the start of the event: “It’s you, it’s me, it’s all of us.”

The term “modern” here isn’t a euphemism for ‘young but refers to the emergence of a new type of learner who consumes information continuously via their smartphone.

43% of employees learn outside the company

Overwhelmed, distracted, impatient and adept at multitasking, the Modern Learner has transformed traditional approaches to training. This type of learner is not restricted to the mandatory training hours organized by Learning & Development departments, but they learn continuously, whenever and wherever they choose. 

As Xavier Durochat, Head of Learning at BNP Paribas highlighted, 43% of employees learn outside of work. This reflects the fact that training today is no longer confined to the workplace. This idea of continuous learning was perfectly summed up by Marie Casery Madueño, Global Learning Business Partner at AXA Partners with the simple and impactful phrase: “training is when you learn” In other words, it’s all the time.

Anne-Sophie Gimenez, Founder of the Orange Learning Agency, expanded upon this, emphasizing the importance of making training content “flexible” and easily accessible at any time.

During the course of the morning, the speakers touched on the themes of engagement, peer-to-peer collaboration, the creation of an open learning ecosystem, the impact of video-learning and how learning managers must adopt a “marketing style mindset”. These fascinating discussion threads bring new, exciting answers to the age-old topic of corporate training.
